Terms of Participation for
Potential Motheread® Arizona Partners
Audience
- Motheread® Arizona’s target audience is underliterate parents and caregivers, so interested sites that do not already provide services to this population should partner with local organizations and agencies that do, in order to secure the target audience.
- If your organization does not have the staff to send to the Motheread® Institute or the facilities to hold adult discussion sessions, partner with a local agency that does.
Facilitator Training
- Staff rather than volunteers should be trained.
- At least 2 staff members per site should be trained at the Motheread® Institute, unless otherwise agreed upon with the state coordinator.
- Trainees must attend the entire 24-hour, 4-day Training Institute in order to be certified; absences may not be excused nor make-up sessions held.
- There is a fee for the Training Institute, and sites will be charged an additional fee for last-minute, unfilled spots at the Training Institute. Motheread® Arizona recommends that each site maintain a small waiting list in case a scheduled trainee is unable to attend. Otherwise, Motheread® Arizona will require a reimbursement of the $650/person training fee already paid to the National Office, if those slots cannot be filled by the state coordinator from other sites.
Use of Copyrighted Curriculum
- Only trained facilitators may use the Motheread® curriculum, which may not be loaned to nor copied for anyone else, including team-teaching assistants.
- Only the titles and lesson plans in the Teacher’s Guide section of the curriculum may be used for adult Motheread® sessions. It is recommended that the lesson plans selected be used in the order they appear in the adult curriculum, as they progress in both adult literacy and child development skills.
- Only the English and/or Spanish Storysharing Plans (1 page) corresponding to those lessons in the Teacher’s Guide may be copied and given to adult participants to take home. The Group Storysharing Plans (opposite page) may not be copied for them.
- Only the English and/or Spanish Storysharing Plans (1 page) may be copied and given to children in a Group Storysharing session for them to take home.
Program Implementation
- A "series" of discussions should be for a small group of 10 to 15 repeat adult participants from the target audience.
- A series for the repeat adult participants should consist of 8 to 12 discussions that are 1-1/2 to 2 hours in length, so that the participants may make enough progress in their literacy skills for measurable outcomes.
Team Teaching and Storysharing
- Any Motheread® adult series must be led by two trained facilitators or a trained facilitator and an assistant, who may not receive a copy of the copyrighted Motheread® curriculum.
- Only a trained facilitator may lead a Group Storysharing session for children.
