Project Civil Discourse - A Statewide Effort to Create Respectful Dialogue and Discourse on Public Issues in 2008 - Presented by: Arizona Humanities Council

Project Civil Discourse is a special initiative of the Arizona Humanities Council working in collaboration with organizations from around the state to provide trainings, forums and special events that model and provide insight on collaborative problem-solving skills. The goal is to widely share proven skills that can enhance and improve public discussion about the important issues that effect our future.

    KICK-OFF with Mike McCurry, Former Press Secretary to President Bill Clinton discussing "Improving Political Discourse in the Media: Fantasy or Reality?" at the Virginia G. Piper Auditorium (7th St. and Van Buren). Free event, free parking off 7th Street. RSVP at 602/257-0335.

    7:00 PM, Burton Barr Public Library
    "Exploiting Racial Fears in American Politics." Dr. Matthew Whittaker explores the history of the exploitation of racial fear as a fundamental organizing principle of American politics, and examines how Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy has impacted this historic mindset.
  • "Third Friday" Speaker/Discussion Series
    5:30-7:00 PM, at The Ellis-Shackelford House, 1242 N. Central Phoenix.
    No charge. Light refreshments. Designed to provide issue-related insights and engage participants in thoughtful discussion, the series features presentations addressing contemporary issues, followed by facilitated conversations incorporating a simple civil discourse technique.
